Garland Continues Leadership Tradition on National Committee

Garland Mayor Douglas Athas and Mayor Pro Tem Lori Barnett Dodson have been reappointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2014 First Tier Suburbs Council. This council represents cities and towns outside of central cities and inside the ring of developing suburbs and rural areas. They share unique challenges and strengths that should be included in national, state and regional policy discussions. The appointment was announced by NLC President Chris Coleman, mayor, St. Paul, Minn.

In addition, Mayor Athas has been appointed to the NLC's 2014 Community and Economic Development Policy and Advocacy Committee. This committee develops NLC federal policy positions on issues involving housing, community and economic development, land use, recreation and parks, historic preservation and international competitiveness.

This is Mayor Athas’ fifth year on the First Tier Suburbs committee, including one term as chair. This is Mayor Pro Tem Dodson’s third year. Former Garland Mayor Bob Day served on the inaugural First Tier Suburb Council. Garland has had representation on this important panel each year since. As members of the committee, Mayor Athas and Mayor Pro Tem Dodson will play key roles in strengthening suburban communities across the nation and will help set organizational policies on federal issues, while exploring city challenges and networking with peers.

Mayor Athas believes Garland’s hard work in this area has made a difference well beyond the city’s borders. “The National League of Cities has continuously looked to Garland for innovative solutions. I am very proud of the opportunity to continue working with NLC and the First Tier Suburbs Council. This is a great opportunity for us to further our working relationships with many cities and towns across the country. It is rare for one city to have two representatives serve on one council and I am very proud of the contribution that Mayor Pro Tem Dodson has given to this council.”
“I look forward to continuing my work with the First Tier Suburbs Council,” said Mayor Pro Tem Dodson. “I am proud to be able to share best practices and the great programs Garland City staff has developed in this arena and exchange information with other cities.”

Mayor Athas was elected in May 2013 and previously served six years on the City Council representing District 1. Mayor Pro Tem Dodson was elected to the Garland City Council in 2011 representing District 6.

The chair of this year’s First Tier Suburbs Council is Corey Rushton, council member, West Valley City, Utah. Serving as this year’s vice chairs are Stanley Koci, mayor, Bedford, Ohio. and Gary Sherwood, council member, Glendale, Ariz.
