Flu shots, health screenings and much more are available at Garland’s annual Healthy Living Expo. The event is set for Saturday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center, 4999 Naaman Forest Blvd.
Flu shots will be available through the City of Garland Health Department. Please bring your insurance card for BCBS, Medicaid or CHIP and Medicare “Part B.” For a complete list of available vaccines and costs, please visit the event website or call 972-205-3370.
“Healthy You” exhibitors will offer a variety of free health screenings, including vision, hearing, bone density, blood pressure, cholesterol and more. You can be screened as a potential bone marrow donor, and gather information about a variety of health issues ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to osteoporosis.
This year’s event will include a special health screening for young people ages 12-22. Representatives from “Living for Zachary” will conduct heart screenings as part of their ongoing effort to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in young people. “Living for Zachary” was founded in honor of Zachary Schrah, who was only 16 years old when he collapsed during a 2009 high school football practice in Plano.
The non-invasive screening includes an electrocardiogram (EKG), an echocardiogram and a blood pressure test. It is necessary to pre-register and select an appointment time for the heart screenings at http://l4z.teamfrontera.com/. Each screening costs $100 and will take about 20 minutes to complete.
A wide variety of exhibitors will feature information about nutrition, exercise and other healthy lifestyle information.
Family safety is part of a healthy lifestyle. Garland’s Police and Fire Departments will be on-hand sharing information and resources for the safety of your home and business. The Garland Youth Council will encourage event patrons to take a safe driving pledge and share information specifically for teen drivers. The City’s Transportation Department will discuss pedestrian crossing and other road safety topics. Register for CodeRED emergency notifications at the Office of Emergency Management booth and learn about the City’s new outdoor warning siren system.
“Healthy Earth” exhibitors will feature landscaping information, energy-saving advice, recycling information and much more. You will have the opportunity to recycle or donate a multitude of items. The event will also include adoptable pets from the Garland Animal Shelter, electronics recycling, document shredding, a drop-off for expired or unwanted medications, and donation drop-offs for shoes and discarded eyeglasses.
The Expo includes the H2O 5K, sponsored by the City of Garland’s Water and Stormwater Management departments to raise awareness about conserving and protecting water resources while encouraging physical fitness.
Admission to the Expo is free. The first 750 patrons who visit the Expo will receive a free folding tote bag. Only one bag per family, please.
The Healthy Living Expo is presented by Baylor Medical Center at Garland, the City of Garland Water Utilities, Environmental Waste Services, and Stormwater Management, Garland Power & Light, Garland Independent School District, and the Garland Chamber of Commerce with Fox4 as broadcast media sponsor.
