Healthy Living Expo 2013: Recycle Row & Healthy Earth Activities

If you’re looking for a chance to recycle or donate unused goods, be sure to come to Garland’s annual Healthy Living Expo. The event is set for Saturday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center, 4999 Naaman Forest Blvd. The Expo features “Heathy You” and “Healthy Earth” activities.

Outdoor Recycle Row:

A drive-through drop-off area will be available on the north side of Naaman Forest Blvd. Be sure to checkwith recycling and donation stations for a variety of items:

• Batteries Plus will collect batteries;
• Garland Animal Services and Garland Pawsibilities will collect pet products such as dry pet food, leashes, towels and more;
• Alliance Document Shredding will provide secure, on-site document shredding (limit 4 boxes per vehicle);
• Naaman Forest High School Class of 2015 will recycle electronic devices such as computers, laptops, cell phones and televisions;
• Goodwill Industries will collect household goods such as clothing, books, home décor, toys, and games;
• Comfort Keepers will accept gently used walkers, wheelchairs, scooters, bath chairs and other medical equipment.

Indoor Recycle Row:

The following recycle/reuse opportunities will be available in the Curtis Culwell Center foyer:

• The Shoe Bank will collect gently used children’s and adult athletic shoes;
• The Garland Police Department will accept and dispose of unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications;
• The Lions Club will collect eyeglasses, frames and accessories;
• Recycle plastic grocery and retail shopping bags, plastic wrap, stretch wrap, plastic sheeting and cleaner bags with Garland Environmental Waste Services.

After you drop off your donations and recycling, visit the other Expo exhibitors to learn more about energy and water conservation, composting, recycling, climate-friendly landscaping and much more. Visit with area businesses which specialize in sustainable lifestyle products and services. Meet representatives from local and regional government agencies to learn more about free and low-cost resources to help you reduce your environmental footprint and save money!

The Expo also includes “Healthy You” exhibitors offering a variety of free health screenings and helpful insights for nutrition, exercise and more. Flu shots will also be available for a cost.

Pets from the Garland Animal Shelter will also be on-site, waiting for a new family to adopt them into a forever home.

Admission to the Expo is free. The first 750 patrons who visit the Expo will receive a free folding tote bag. Only one bag per family, please.

The Healthy Living Expo is presented by Baylor Medical Center at Garland, the City of Garland Water Utilities, Environmental Waste Services, and Stormwater Management, Garland Power & Light, Garland Independent School District, and the Garland Chamber of Commerce with Fox4 as broadcast media sponsor.
