Christmas on the Square Wins Statewide Recognition

The City of Garland’s annual Christmas on the Square event earned the Award of Excellence from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO). Christmas on the Square is hosted in historic Downtown Garland each year and includes a tree lighting ceremony, pictures with Santa, horse-drawn carriage rides, snow tubing hills, delicious festival food and holiday shopping.

For the 2012 event, attendees were entertained by choirs from area schools, as well the City of Garland Employee Carolers with the Lakeshore Brass Choir. WFAA Channel 8 news anchor Gloria Campos helped Santa lead the countdown to the lighting of the City Tree, which brightened the Downtown Square throughout the month of December.

“Christmas on the Square is a wonderful, family-friendly event. We are delighted to receive statewide recognition. Every year families join the festivities to start the holiday season,” said Garland Mayor Douglas Athas. “I applaud the City staff and volunteers who make it happen!”

TAMIO recognized Christmas on the Square in the Best Recurring Special Events category during its annual TAMIO Awards ceremony on June 7, 2013 in College Station, Texas.

Garland’s 2013 edition of Christmas on the Square is scheduled for December 5, 2013.
