Garland Animal Services Receives Spay/Neuter Grant

Garland Animal Services has been awarded a grant from PetSmart Charities® (www.petsmartcharities.org) totaling $83,100 to pay for dog sterilizations for Garland residents living in the 75041 zip code. The grant is expected to fund approximately 1,100 sterilizations during a two-year period, and is designed to target a specific geographic area to assess the impact of free sterilizations on the number of stray or unwanted animals. This grant, along with other programs promoting responsible pet ownership, should help minimize the number of unwanted animals impounded at the Garland Animal Shelter, which took in more than 11,000 animals during Fiscal Year 2011-12. Preventing unwanted puppies or kittens through pet sterilization is much easier than finding homes for them.

The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) has been selected to provide the spay/neuter services funded by the grant. TCAP has been providing low-cost sterilization services in the North Texas area for more than a decade and has recently teamed up with Garland Pawsibilities, a local nonprofit volunteer group that is committed to finding homes for animals from the Garland Animal Shelter. Through this partnership, TCAP is already providing low-cost sterilizations to all Garland residents through Garland Pawsabilities.

“PetSmart Charities® has provided a wonderful opportunity for the Garland residents within the target area to take advantage of free dog sterilizations. Thank you PetSmart Charities® ,” said Jason Chessher, director of Health for the City of Garland.

Sterilization services will be provided at Pawsibilities’ location at 3136 S. Shiloh Road in Garland. Residents who live in the 75041 zip code can visit http://www.garlandpawsibilities.orgor call 940-566-5551 for information on how to obtain free or low cost services.
