Officer Shoots Fleeing Suspect
Shortly before 1am August 31, a Garland police officer spotted a white GMC pick-up near downtown Garland. The officer had information that the same vehicle had eluded Sachse police earlier in the week by fleeing. The officer attempted to stop the truck, the vehicle fled and a chase ensued. The chase lasted approximately 30 minutes, and involved Garland Police, the Department of Public Safety helicopter and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
The chase ended when the suspect vehicle drove into a cul-de-sac in the 3000 block of Monarch Drive in Mesquite. As the driver of the truck attempted to turn around in the cul-de-sac while continuing to flee, officers attempted to box the truck in and it collided with a Garland police car.
Fearing for the safety of the officers, a 7-year veteran officer fired multiple rounds into the suspect vehicle, striking and killing the 25 year-old driver. There was a 20 year-old female passenger in the truck, and she was not injured. No officers were injured. The driver was identified as 25 year old Michael Vincent Allen of Wylie.
As a matter of routine, the officer will be placed on administrative duty while Mesquite Police conduct the criminal investigation and Garland Police conduct the internal investigation.
