We The People Conference: Workshops & Memorable Moments
Garland's Community Multicultural Commission (CMC) is celebrating its 10th anniversary this Saturday by hosting the We The People, For The People Conference from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Conference Center. The event will include opportunities to celebrate Garland's diversity and to learn more about services available in the community.
The Conference will feature several workshops and information booths focused on services for senior citizens. One workshop will focus on how to better understand and access Social Security and Medicare benefits. Another session will provide tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft or fraud, as well as preventing in-home accidents. A third session will help adults prepare for the decisions and issues related to caring for their aging parents. Exhibitor booths will provide information on a variety of services ranging from transportation, to property maintenance, to senior living facilities.
Meanwhile, representatives from the Garland Independent School District will provide information about key issues of importance to parents of school-aged children. Information tables and school district officials will be available in the Conference Center and on the Culwell Arena floor as part of the Healthy Living Expo. GISD School Board President Linda Griffin will host a workshop in the Conference Center Lecture Hall at 11 a.m. to help parents learn about the best methods of accessing information and communicating with their students' schools and teachers.
One of the highlights of the Conference will be the Naturalization Ceremony in which 40 new citizens will be welcomed to the United States. The ceremony is open to the public, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Audience seating is limited.
In the Culwell Center Arena, performers representing various cultures will be featured on the Healthy Living Expo main stage from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. These musical and dance performances will inspire and delight patrons from the Conference and Expo.
