Pets, Pledges, Pink Firetrucks & More!

Healthy Living Expo 2012

Pets, pledges and pink firetrucks are among the many features that will take center stage this Saturday at Garland's Healthy Living Expo. The event is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center, 4999 Naaman Forest Blvd.

The event features health screenings, information booths, activities and entertainment designed to raise awareness about how to improve our personal health and that of the world around us. Here are a few special features you won't want to miss:

Pet Adoptions - Adoptable pets from Garland's Pet Adoption Center will be available on site, outside the Culwell Arena. Please consider giving a dog or cat a forever home!

Pledge to Drive Safe - The Garland Youth Council wants teens and parents to pledge to be safe drivers. Promise to avoid driving distractions like texting, obey speed limits, wear seat belts, and other key risk factors. Teen drivers also will be invited to record their pledges on video.
Pink Firetruck - Why would someone want to paint a firetruck pink? To fight breast cancer! The Guardians of the Ribbon, South Texas Chapter, will bring their pink firetruck to the Expo to raise awareness about this disease and funds for breast cancer research. Look for them in the East Parking Lot.

Test Drives - Garland's Office of Environmental Quality will offer test drives of alternative fuel vehicles in the East Parking Lot

The Healthy Living Expo also will feature home fire safety information from the Garland Fire Department and tips for preventing identity theft presented by the Garland Police Department. Garland's Environmental Waste Services Department is staging a fun, interactive game to help you learn more about recycling and proper disposal of household waste. Learn how to reduce your electric bills and still be comfortable in your home by visiting the Garland Power & Light booth. And look for exhibits that provide information about water conservation, preventing water pollution, litter prevention, and the wealth of recreation options available at the City's parks and recreation centers.

All this and much more will be available at the Healthy Living Expo, on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit the event website.
