The Specialized Crime section is a covert investigative unit comprised of the Intelligence Unit, Sex Offender Apprehension and Registration Unit (SOAR), and the department’s Crime analysts. The investigators assigned to these various units are highly trained and motivated, each possessing a broad background in criminal investigative experience.
The Intelligence Unit specializes in Homeland Defense issues, extremists groups, dangerous individuals, surveillance, information gathering, assimilation and dissemination, and vice investigations.
Crime analysts are charged with the gathering and analyzing of reported criminal activity to identify crime trends, modus operandi (methods of committing crimes which can link suspects to multiple offenses), and potential locations of future criminal activity. This information is relied upon for deployment of department resources.
The SOAR Unit specializes in sex offender registration law. Investigators are responsible for registering and monitoring all registered sex offenders that reside in the City of Garland. Investigators conduct compliance investigations (which include inspections of the offenders’ homes), surveillances, and sex offender registrations. When violations are discovered, this unit aggressively pursues criminal prosecution.
