According to the 2010 Census, the City of Garland ranks 12th in population in Texas and 87th in the country. Each year the Planning & Community Development Department updates the population estimate based on building permit data and changes to occupancy rates and household size. The City of Garland population estimate for January 1, 2014, is 233,206 persons.
Much of Garland's population growth occurred during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, and has slowed as undeveloped land becomes more scarce and Garland approaches buildout. Garland grew 5.1 percent between the 2000 and 2010 Census.
