City of Garland Stepping Stone

Champions One spring afternoon in 1981, a group of Garland city planners came out to visit what was then a deserted stretch of overgrown farmland in North Garland. They had an eye toward spurring development in this little-used part of the city.

They saw fields covered with bright pink and yellow wildflowers. These native Firewheels gave their name to what would develop into the largest complex of golf courses in Texas and the third-biggest in the United States.

Before the golf course was built, there wasn't really much to this part of town. "When they were building the Old Course", recalls one longtime Garland resident, "I remember thinking, why in the world would they put a golf course there?"

The Old Course opened in 1983, and proved so successful that the city sought to expand. A land-and-cash swap with a local developer gave Firewheel enough elbow room to build the Lakes Course, which opened in 1987. Meanwhile, as home and highway construction expanded, this corner of the city became an ideal place for development.

Over the next few years, both the Lakes and Old Courses proved so popular with Garland natives and visitors that the city built up a healthy surplus. Once again, a decision was made to invest. The result was The Bridges -- three nines, featuring bentgrass greens along with an attractive stone clubhouse featuring a full-service restaurant and comprehensive conference facilities.

The Bridges helped position Firewheel's 600 acres among the most acclaimed of Texas public facilities. Firewheel's courses have brought elite golfers time and again -- the Old and Bridges Courses have been a venue for PGA Qualifying School tournaments from 1985-88, as well as a regular site for regional qualifying tournaments for the United States Open, the United States Amateur and the prestigious NITRO Texas State Open. Firewheel has consistently scored top ratings in the Dallas Morning News public course rankings and the Old Course has received the top spot five times since its inception.

Firewheel is a vital recreational hub for the community, as well as a friendly destination where visitors enjoy great golf. The multipurpose facilities are versitile enough to host a range of events including company outings, golf tournament, parties and weddings. Firewheel offers you the best combination of golf and event facilities in the state of Texas.
