Since 1923, the City of Garland has been providing electric service to its citizens through Garland Power & Light (GP&L), its locally owned and controlled not-for-profit municipal utility. With nearly 68,000 customers, GP&L is the fourth largest municipal utility in Texas and the 41st largest in the nation.
The mission of Garland Power & Light is to provide high quality, safe and reliable services at competitive rates to the citizens and businesses of the City of Garland through the efforts of a professional and dedicated workforce, and to enhance the quality of life in the city by creating a utility environment that supports economic development.
GP&L continually emphasizes customer service and involvement in the industry. Both management and staff are active members of the American Public Power Association, Texas Public Power Association, Electrical Reliability Council of Texas and other industry organizations.
Garland Power & Light has one gas-fired generating plant that has 407 megawatts of generation capacity. In addition, Garland partners in the Texas Municipal Power Agency which operates the 462 megawatt coal-fired Gibbons Creek Power Plant. Garland's electric distribution system has 325 miles of overhead lines and 552 miles of underground lines. Its transmission system consists of 23 substations and 126 miles of transmission lines. Garland's peak load for 2010 was 492 megawatts, with annual operating revenues of $232 million dollars.
