Office of the Chief of Police

Chief M. Bates

Welcome to the Garland Police Department website!

If you are a resident or business owner in our community, we hope that by visiting our website you will be able to learn more about the men and women who make up your police department.  Our workforce consists of 324 sworn police personnel and 137 civilian personnel (a total of 461 individuals) who work as a team to make Garland a safer place to live and work.  I am extremely proud of the members of our department and believe that you will not find a law enforcement agency anywhere that is more dedicated to protecting their community.  The mission of the Garland Police department is to protect life and property, and to provide a feeling of safety and security in the community through fair and impartial enforcement of the law, community partnerships, and creative problem solving.  We will always do our best to fulfill our mission to protect and serve those in our community.

In our efforts to provide the best services possible to our community, we have divided much of our department into specialized units (see Unit Profiles and Community Programs on this website for more information).  There are the detectives who conduct the follow-up investigations when someone has become a victim of crime.  There are also the Neighborhood Police Officers who focus strictly on reducing crime in your neighborhoods.  Our Traffic Unit focuses on keeping our streets safe through enforcement and accident investigation while the investigators in our Narcotics Unit and Gang Unit focus in those specialized areas.  And, the list goes on and on.

But, I am most proud of the police officers in our Patrol Division who put on the uniform each day to serve as our first responders to keep our community safe.  They are the backbone of our department.  Even though they share the same family, social issues and shortcomings as do all citizens, their devotion to their chosen profession and to our city is evident as they risk their lives daily and serve as our “thin blue line” between crime and our citizens.  For more information about the specific acts of heroism and meritorious service beyond the call of duty, see the Commendations section of our website to view the summaries from our annual Police Awards Dinner hosted by the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.

Whether you want to live, work, or play in Garland or if you’re simply interested in learning more, please take the time to check us out!  We have much to offer to families, homeowners, and businesses.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your Police Chief.  I hope to continue to do so as long as I can be worthy of your trust and respect.

Sincerely,

Mitch Bates
Chief of Police
Garland Police Department
